A Dog-Friendly Trip to Delta, Colorado
A dog-friendly stay in Delta, Colorado, including Riverwood Resort, Confluence Park, and Creations on Main.
In May 2025, we took a road trip from Morrison to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to celebrate our anniversary. Of course, we took the dogs with us.
Because I was planning this trip at the last minute (no surprise there), we weren't able to stay in Montrose, which is the closest town to the national park.
I started looking a bit further out, and found Delta. The biggest selling point for me was Riverwood Resort, because it was on the water and the rooms had their own yards! I was also interested in some of the restaurants and the nearby dog park, but it was mostly the room with a yard.

Riverwood Resort
We drove to Delta from Morrison (stopping in Palisade for lunch) and went directly to Riverwood Resort.
Riverwood had contactless check-in, which was convenient because we didn’t have to wait in line at the front. It did mean we had to remember a code (easy for Adam, difficult for me, not a problem for Maya or Piper).
The room was comfortable, with plenty of space for the four of us and an extremely soft bed. Piper made herself comfortable right away, claiming both the bed and the couch.

The look of a dog who is scared to death that she will have to share any soft spot.
Maya also eventually made herself comfortable, choosing to sleep under the AC unit.

I have no explanation for this dog and her choices.
The room had a back door that opened up to a small gravel yard. So we could open up the door to let the dogs out whenever they needed to go, which was great. We were asked to clean up after them – totally understandable. The yard also came with Adirondack chairs and a fire pit (more on that later).

Not only did we have a door straight out to the yard, but a gate from the yard to the lawn
From the yard, we had a view of the river and quick access to the lawn. I appreciated the grassy lawn, since we still haven't convinced Piper that she doesn't need grass to do her business.
We did have to watch the dogs closely while we walked them on the lawn, because of all the fun (bad) stuff they wanted to eat.

Piper was determined to eat something that would make her sick
After we got settled in, we walked the dogs along the Gunnison River, on a nice unpaved trail.
The dogs enjoyed sniffing and exploring, but the river was moving way too fast for them to attempt swimming.

Maya's pace means we stay a good photographing distance behind Piper and Adam
After dinner, we hung out in our yard. In the firepit, we found instructions for ordering a s'mores kit, so of course we did that – it was our anniversary after all.
I texted the provided number with my request, and in a few minutes, we got more firewood, starters, a lighter, and everything we needed for luxury s'mores (with Ghirardelli!).
Adam got the fire going, and we roasted the marshmallows. It was so nice to sit by the fire with the dogs, listening to the river, enjoying nature and time together.

I have now been convinced that fancy chocolate is worth it for s'mores
Confluence Park
Even though the dogs had just been to Riverbend Park in Palisade, and they had a yard at Riverwood, we decided to give them more dog park time before we got dinner.
Very close to Riverwood is Confluence Park, which has a fenced dog park. We were impressed with how big the dog park was, even though our pups didn't fully take advantage of it. The grass did get the Piper roll of approval.

Huge park, friendly dog, and still they just slowly plodded along, not playing.
Creations on Main
On BringFido, Creations on Main was labeled as dog-friendly. I didn't independently verify this (very unusual for me, I must have been worn out from our big road trip). Unfortunately, when we got to the restaurant, the folks there told us their patio wasn't open. Whoops!
They were very kind and quickly prepared a to-go order for us, even providing us with a knife from their silverware bin.
We took our food back to the room and it was absolutely delicious. I had a “hander," a tortilla sandwich specialty of the restaurant. Adam had the purple kraut, with an excellent locally-made brat.

We had no idea what to expect, but this Creations on Main was amazing!
Reflections
I'll admit that Delta, Colorado was never on my bucket list of travel destinations, but we had a nice time there. The location was pretty convenient for Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, and I would absolutely stay at Riverwood Resort again. Our food options were limited, but with a place like Creations on Main, who needs anywhere else to eat?
