A Dog-Friendly Trip to Delta, Colorado

A Dog-Friendly Trip to Delta, Colorado
Piper was interested, but cautious

On our Dog-Friendly Road Trip to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, we stayed in Delta, Colorado.

While we were in Delta, we stayed at the Riverwood Resort, visited Confluence Park, and got dinner from Creations on Main.

Riverwood Resort

Montrose is the closest town to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, but because I was planning at the last minute (as per usual), the hotels in Montrose were mostly booked up.

I started looking a little further out and found Riverwood Resort in Delta. I was won over by their location on the river and the fact that the rooms came with their own fenced yard!

The yard was equipped with Adirondack chairs and a fire pit (more on that later). It was great being able to open the back door and let the dogs out.

From our yard, we had a view of the river and quick access to the lawn. I appreciated the grassy lawn, since we still haven't convinced Piper that she doesn't need grass to do her business.

We did have to watch the dogs closely while we walked them on the lawn, because of all the fun (bad) stuff they wanted to eat.

After we got settled in, we walked the dogs along the Gunnison River, on a nice unpaved trail.

The dogs enjoyed sniffing and exploring, but the river was moving way too fast for them to attempt swimming.

After dinner, we hung out in our yard. In the firepit, we found instructions for ordering a s'mores kit, so of course we did that – it was our anniversary after all.

I texted the provided number with my request, and in a few minutes, we got more firewood, starters, a lighter, and everything we needed for luxury s'mores (with Ghirardelli!).

Adam got the fire going, and we roasted the marshmallows. It was so nice to sit by the fire with the dogs, listening to the river, enjoying nature and time together.

Confluence Park

Even though the dogs had just been to Riverbend Park in Palisade, and they had a yard at Riverwood, we decided to give them more dog park time before we got dinner.

Very close to Riverwood is Confluence Park, which has a fenced dog park. We were impressed with how big the dog park was, even though our pups didn't fully take advantage of it. The grass did get the Piper roll of approval.

Creations on Main

On BringFido, Creations on Main was labeled as dog-friendly. I didn't independently verify this (very unusual for me, I must have been worn out from our big road trip). Unfortunately, when we got to the restaurant, the folks there told us their patio wasn't open. Whoops!

They were very kind and quickly prepared a to-go order for us, even providing us with a knife from their silverware bin.

We took our food back to the room and it was absolutely delicious. I had a “hander," a tortilla sandwich specialty of the restaurant. Adam had the purple kraut, with an excellent locally-made brat.
